Brightly painted walls can help liven up a dull or dark room. You don't need to paint every wall a bright color, either. One brightly painted accent wall can really help to breathe some life into any room in the house. Decorating around a bright-colored wall doesn't have to be a challenge. Let's take a look at a few tips to help you decorate around brightly painted walls so you don't need to go out and hire an interior designer.

A color wheel can help you choose complementary colors that work well with brightly painted walls.

Complement the Colors

If the walls in the room you want to decorate have already been painted a bright color, find accessories and furniture that complement your color choice. If you've painted the walls a warm color, try decorating the room with cool-colored furniture, artwork, and accessories. If the walls have been painted a cool color, try decorating the other way around - with warm-colored furniture and accessories.

Fight the urge to pick black and white furniture and accessories to tone down the room. The furniture you choose can still be colorful and vibrant even if the walls already are. Although it may leave you a bit out of your comfort zone, give it a few months to grow on you. You may find it more appealing once you've gotten used to it.

Paint a Border

If you've recently painted your walls a bright color and you're unsure of it, paint a darker colored border around the walls to tone it down. Just like the furniture, artwork, and accessories you choose, ensure that the border color you choose complements the color of the walls. If you're not sure where to start, obtain a color wheel from your local home improvement or paint store and compare your options before you purchase.

Think of Mother Nature

When thinking of decorating ideas for brightly painted walls, think of natural colors you'd find outside to help make the task easier. If you've painted the walls a bright blue, consider the colors you'd find at the beach when picking out furniture and accessories. You'd be surprised how well greens, browns, and neutral colors can all mix together to give you the feeling of a day by the ocean.

The same goes for other colors. For example, if you've painted your walls a bright yellow, try sticking to dark woods and reddish-brown colors when purchasing furniture and accessories. If you can find the color combinations outside in nature, chances are it'll look good inside of your home as well.

Add Neutral Colors

If you want to tone down the walls with your furniture and accessories, try picking neutral accents like white, cream, tan, gray, and ivory. If you already have furniture but feel like the colors contrast too much or simply don't work well together, you can purchase slip covers for your couches and ottomans. For your smaller accessories and artwork, try brown, charcoal, or black to help offset the vibrant wall colors.

If you're trying to avoid colors that contrast or compete with the walls, simply look at a color wheel. Shades that are located across from one another are complementary colors and should work well together. Avoid colors that are as bright and bold as the walls if you're attempting to tone it down, and don't be afraid to repaint if you feel that things really aren't working together.
